4 totally natural ways to beat anxiety

There are a lot of advantages to living in the modern world. Indeed, if you think about all aspects of life, then the logical conclusion is to believe that it’s better to live in this age, rather than at any point in history, because life today is generally more comfortable, safer, and more enjoyable than in days gone by.

However, it would be wrong to think that everything about life in the modern world is positive. This is not the case. Take anxiety, for instance. The percentage of people who are suffering from anxiety has been steadily on the rise in recent years, and it’s not hard to see why -- these are tough times that we’re living in. Plus, the general makeup of the modern world, with smartphones, tech, and long commutes and working hours means that it’s a little more difficult to relax than it could be.


The good news is that we don’t have to just accept that we’re going to be anxious. There are natural ways to combat the effects of stress. We’ll run through some of them in this blog. Incorporate them into your life, and it won’t be long before you’re feeling more relaxed and stress-free.


Better sleep


Sleep is a lot more important than a lot of people realise. Without it, you’ll find that more or less everything is much more difficult to do, or at least to do well. We all know how much better we feel after a full night of sleep, after all. And it also has an impact on your anxiety levels, too. Recent studies have shown that insufficient amounts of sleep can raise the probability of anxiety by around 30%. So if you’re feeling anxious, then take a look at your sleeping habits -- are you getting enough rest each night?


If the answer is no, then look at making some changes. It all begins with your pre-sleep routine. If you’re taking a bath, reading a book, and avoiding screen time, then you’ll find it much easier to reach the land of Nod. It’s also recommended to avoid alcohol and caffeine products too late in the day. Caffeine raises the heart rate anyway, and can stay in your system for up to twelve hours.


Spend less time on social media


Social media websites were supposed to bring us all closer together, and generally be a positive force for humanity. Yet, while there are, of course, positive aspects to social media, there is a dark side, too -- studies have shown that it can negatively impact anxiety. Websites like Instagram increase FOMO (fear of missing out) and increase feelings of inadequacy, which can worsen the symptoms of depression. If you find that you’re spending too much time scrolling through your social media channels, try taking a detox for a few days. You’ll likely find that you feel better. Remember that these sites intentionally design their websites to keep you there, so you might have to work hard to break the spell -- but you can do it!


Keep busy: Start a new hobby or restart an old one.


When we’re feeling anxious, we sometimes want to do nothing other than to hide away from the world. While that’s OK for a couple of hours, if it’s becoming a long-term way of life, then you’ll make your feelings of anxiety worse. That’s because you’ll be more likely to focus on your anxiety. Sometimes, a little bit of distraction can go a long way. So if you’re struggling with anxiety, look at picking up a hobby. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a new hobby or an old one, so long as you enjoy it. You might just find that it jolts your mind into a different space.


Walk in a woodland


One of the reasons why anxiety is on the rise is because we’re not as active as we should be, and we’re also spending less time in the outdoors. Studies have shown that working up a sweat is one of the best ways to release nervous feelings, and it can also reduce symptoms of depression too. Plus, you’ll be getting fitter! Studies have also shown that spending just fifteen minutes in nature can boost your mood, and the effects can be even more pronounced if you’re there for two hours or more. So look at building spending some time in the woods into your weekly schedule. Grab some friends (or go by yourself) and visit the woods. It will do you a world of good.
